Painting Final

Exam Questions

1. My most successful project was my watercolor project . I intended to complete this project with a theme in mind and I adapted my idea for my theme from the quote that I also incorporated into one of the four projects . In my project in which I recreated " the umbrella girl " I included the quote " if you want the rainbow , you gotta' put up with the rain " and I used this as the theme and created my other three projects . Using bleeding , I created my first project using the colors of the rainbow to imply a rain effect to the paper . Second , I created " umbrella girl " using opaque and transparent washes , along with the tissue pick-up technique . In my third project , I used bleeding and opaque wash to paint the sky , sidewalk and umbrella and transparent wash to create the reflection to add the effect and imply that the pavement had just been rained on . In my final project , I used an old book page to create a still life on nontraditional paper . I painted the page like a window view from my house after it had recently rained using bleeding and transparent wash . Without the techniques that I chose to use , especially in this project , the rain effect would not have been as prominent .

2. I felt that I overcame the most obstacles in creating my ceiling tile . The following were my obstacles :

- background color .
- sizing of shilhouettes .
- initial drip look .
- brown fairy dust line .
- sparkle Tinker Bell dust .

I initially wanted to paint the background like my inspiration in colors of brown , green and blue . However , because my favorite color was orange and I wanted the ceiling tile to reflect me . There wasn't a lot of variation in my background and it was very bland . So I chose to blend an orange color in with my initial pink color . Along with some white to create a tint to its appearance as well .

After drawing the characters to resemble the picture I used for my inspiration on my outline , I photocopied my illustration and resized it and printed it in order to copy them onto my tile .

My inspiration shows that the line created by Tinker Bells fairy dust has a drip effect to it . I first tried to create this effect . Although , after it was painted on my tile I didn't like the way it looked . So I then used white to cover the drips and repainted my background : using other peach colors and my original orange and pink/red colors .

The brown line used to highlight Tinker Bell's flight path in the sky and to accent the other characters was solid brown . This also effected how plain my tile looked .

Using gold metallic paint and the gold sparkles I planned to use before I began painting my tile , I used a sponge technique on the brown line to better visualize Tinker Bell on the tile . Then I continued to cover the tile in gold glitter paint .

3. Compared to my acrylic texture painting , my ceiling tile resembles my growth as an artist over the semester .

My texture painting is very simple . This is something I would typically create . It is a basic idea as soccer is my favorite sport and I used easy techniques to create this piece of work . As it did not take me very long to produce .

* as seen above * my ceiling tile challenged me the most as an artist . It required me to be more open-minded about my work and experiment with different techniques and ideas that were not normally in my realm of projects over the course of the year . This allowed me to expand my creativity as well .

4. I think allowing us to have more freedom with what we created and personal choices in subject matter and material helped us grow as artists . It required us to think in ways that we were not normally used to thinking in . This let us express our creativity differently without certain restrictions that we would have had if there were more guidelines we had to follow for each project .

For example , in my water color project , I created and incorporated my own ideas for this project more than most of my other projects this semester . With only techniques and requirements as to what paper we needed to use for each of the four projects , I could display my creativity and views on which I had intended to create each of the four projects using my own visions . You can see this as my projects changed through out the course of the class .
